Sean Murphy conceived the project that essentially operates as a solo effort, though its path unfolded gradually rather than emerging abruptly. As a teenager in a modest Massachusetts community, Murphy persistently explored electronic tones, signals, and assorted sounds. In those years he joined numerous hardcore punk groups, among them the earliest incarnation that later developed into the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. His training encompassed studies with Pauline Oliveros and Ingram Marshall, and he performed on synthesizer for Engelbert Humperdinck. Murphy then moved to San Francisco, where he appeared with Kasosei and Pyroclastic Flow. In 2000 he encountered Luc LeDuc, a seasoned musician who had worked in both Berlin and Zurich. The pair established The Bad Cassettes, shaping hundreds of reels, diskettes, cassettes, and videotapes into a debut album. Michael Chen aided the release of Bad Master on Below Recordings. The group subsequently toured throughout North America, Europe, and Japan.
