Biography
Forming a fleeting British post-punk pair, the Beach Bullies united Soft Boys associate James A. Smith with vocalist Jill Fricker. Crafted solely on guitar and drum machine, their spare, lo-fi songs moved between wry humor and quiet melancholy, juxtaposing heartache and solitude against pointed comedic edge. The duo produced just one LP, We Rule the Universe, released on Musclebound Records in 1980. Plans for a second album surfaced but remained unfinished. Smith later supplied vocals and guitar to multiple Robyn Hitchcock albums across the 1980s. Manufactured Recordings issued the first reissue of We Rule the Universe in 2015. That edition also contained the unreleased demos from the group’s abandoned follow-up.
