Biography
Formed in 1960, the Beatmen counted among the earliest blues ensembles to reach the mid-’60s beat boom, with engagements in Hamburg that mirrored those of numerous Liverpool acts. Their approach recalled the Poets while addressing atypical American R&B material, including “You Can’t Sit Down,” first issued as an instrumental by the Phil Upchurch Combo. Activity ceased around the decade’s midpoint once a pair of Pye singles failed to register on the charts.
