Biography
Formed in the early 1980s, the Belle Stars emerged as an all-female British pop group after breaking away from the Bodysnatchers. Their roster included Jennie McKeown on vocals, Lesley Shone on bass and vocals, Stella Barker on guitar and vocals, Sarah-Jane Owen on guitar and vocals, Miranda Joyce on saxophone and vocals, Judy Parsons on drums, and Penny Leyton on keyboards and vocals. The band notched four U.K. Top 40 hits from 1982 to 1983—“Iko Iko,” “The Clapping Song,” “Sign of the Times,” and “Sweet Memory”—before disbanding. Placement of “Iko Iko” in the hit film Rain Man later drove the track to an unexpected Top 40 showing on the U.S. charts in 1989.
