Biography
The Bitters built a dense sonic barrage that drew from every phase of rock history, weaving in strands of 1960s girl-group pop, no wave, shoegaze, indie rock, grunge, and contemporary electro-pop. Their explosive stage presence quickly established them among Toronto’s most compelling live acts. Formed around the core partnership of singer and percussionist Aerin Fogel with multi-instrumentalist Ben Cook, formerly of Young Governors, and augmented by an ever-changing lineup of additional musicians, the group first presented its striking material in 2008. A year later they issued their first 7" single through Captured Tracks. With Fogel shifting her vocal approach between the raw punk edge of Exene Cervenka and the fragile elegance of Harriet Wheeler, the pair deployed an exhaustive array of sonic devices—everything short of striking the kitchen sink—during their appearance as one of the standout discoveries at the 2010 South by Southwest festival in Austin, TX.
