Hailing from south west London, England, this UK rock outfit infused its 60s-flavoured sound with the swagger of late-period Rolling Stones, the glossy production values associated with INXS, and understated reggae rhythms and textures. William Topley handled vocals, Kevin Hime-Knowles played bass, Luke Brighty took guitar duties, Simon Hanson sat behind the drums, and Mike Westergaard supplied keyboards. After spending four years performing in London clubs as Just William without securing a domestic deal, the group signed a lucrative contract with MCA Records. Although certain critics faulted the band for the melodrama and sheer scope of its lyrics and arrangements, The Blessing delivered its sweeping storylines with undeniable flair. The highlight arrived via the standout single “Highway 5,” yet the remainder of the debut album also showcased credible, high-octane production rock. Much of that polished execution stemmed from guest contributions by Nicky Hopkins on keyboards, Jeff Porcaro on drums, and Bruce Hornsby on piano. Topley later released several solo projects steeped in roots music.
