Biography
During the 1990s the country-rock outfit Blue Shadows issued a pair of albums across its difficult span. Critics largely praised the first effort, which exceeded even the high hopes attached to any debut. The lineup consisted of singer-guitarist Jeffrey Hatcher, drummer J. B. "Jay" Johnson, bassist Elmar Spanier, and well-known singer-guitarist Billy Cowsill. Cowsill arrived carrying established name recognition and an existing following earned during his years alongside family members in the bubblegum pop ensemble the Cowsills, which operated from 1966 to 1971. That group had served as the inspiration for the television series The Partridge Family.
Before assembling Blue Shadows, Cowsill had worked and recorded with additional acts. After delivering several strong performances the band landed a contract with major label Sony Music. In 1993 the group completed its debut album, On the Floor of Heaven, which featured the tracks "When Will the Heartache End," "The Fool Is the Last One to Know," "Coming on Strong," and "A Thousand Times." Spanier left the lineup that same year and was replaced on bass by Barry Muir.
Blue Shadows recorded its second and final album, Lucky to Me, in 1995. The follow-up proved no outright failure yet fell short of the first record’s stronger reception. The band disbanded the next year. Some members later performed together as the Sugar Beats while others pursued solo endeavors.
