Beyond their capable playing, the Boas possess an origin tale warm enough to soften even jaded industry observers. Three transplants to Chicago—Graeme Gibson, Jonathan Van Herik, and Gabe McDonough—had been searching for a way to start a group when they realized they lacked both a lead singer who already had material to draw on and a keyboardist to complete their sound. While attending a Califone show, Gibson and McDonough noticed Jonathan Klos in the crowd and wondered whether he might fit the role. After a round of drinks, Gibson convinced McDonough to introduce himself; Klos turned out to be precisely the experienced frontman they sought and, conveniently, knew a keyboard player who was preparing to relocate to the city. Once assembled, the quartet signed almost immediately with Overcoat Records and issued an EP titled Mansion. For their first full-length album in 2002 they adopted the name the Boas and again called the record Mansion.
