Born to Shirley and Pat Boone and descended from the legendary country singer Red Foley, the four sisters Cherry, Lindy, Laury and Debby Boone—whose full name is Deborah Anne Boone, born 22 September 1956 in Hackensack, New Jersey—first performed together as a gospel quartet. Their initial appearance came in 1970 while their father toured Japan alongside the Osmonds, when they offered their rendition of “What The World Needs Now Is Love.” The performance quickly generated widespread attention and drew favorable notices, among them a Variety assessment that hailed their stage show as “one of the most-talked about shows of this or any other season.” The Boone Girls served as their first album, followed by First Class; both projects found strong favor among gospel listeners. At the same time, Debby Boone emerged as a prominent solo artist, holding the summit of the US charts for eight weeks with her single “You Light Up My Life.”
