Emerging from the remnants of multiple acclaimed New York City rock ensembles, the Booty Olympics coalesced into an upbeat, high-spirited pop outfit. Mitzi Dodge, the group’s principal songwriter, had performed in several high-school bands before forming one alongside the musician who would later rise to fame as techno artist Moby. She soon joined STP, the all-girl noise act, and toured with them alongside Sonic Youth and a pre-mainstream Nirvana. She has stated that she left after passing out drunk in Kurt Cobain’s bed, then played in a handful of other projects before linking up with the Friggs. Palmyra Delran, the sexy and fun guitarist who powered garage rock through that band, had founded the Friggs. As the group began to splinter, both Dodge and Delran voiced a wish to move forward. During their discussions they chose to trade instruments, with Delran switching to drums while they hunted for a bassist. The three musicians met Betsy Todd in Las Vegas; she proved an ideal fit, and the Booty Olympics were assembled on the spot. A poppy rock act that occasionally ventured into ethereal shoegazing, the trio presented a sound markedly different from the music of their earlier bands. They returned to New York City, cut a series of singles, and recorded their debut album, Boystyle, in 2002.
