Biography
The Bopcats emerged as a rock & roll outfit that fused elements of 1950s attire and attitude with the sound of 1980s rock. Its lineup featured lead vocalist Sonny Baker, singer Jim McTaggaer, drummer Teddy Fury, guitarist Jack de Keyzer, and bassist Zeke Rivers. Between 1980 and 1982 the band issued multiple singles along with two EPs and two full-length albums. In 1983 several departures reduced the group to a short-lived trio known as the Rock Angels.
Around 1979 Baker, McTaggaer, and Fury formed the Bopcats. Early performances took place in neighborhood nightclubs, where the musicians built both stage experience and a modest following. Rivers and de Keyzer soon completed the roster, coinciding with the signing of a contract at Attic Records. A self-titled debut EP appeared in 1980, followed the next year by the EP Kiss Goodbye. Also in 1981 the band completed its first long-player. Wild Jungle Rock, the final album, reached stores in 1982 and attracted scant notice; among its tracks were “Yesterday’s Dreams,” “Buddy This Is It,” “Down the Line,” and “One Hand Loose.”
Following the 1983 dissolution, each member moved into separate projects or solo work. Jack de Keyzer turned to blues and released several independent albums, one of which earned him a Juno nomination in 2000.
