Biography
Without Malcolm McLaren’s notice, the Boyoyo Boys might never have registered beyond South Africa’s borders. The self-styled rock-and-roll swindler lifted their hit single “Puleng” and reworked it into his own track, “Double Dutch.” When he declined to split the royalties, the two sides clashed. Only a drawn-out lawsuit finally delivered the payments the group had been denied. On record and in performance the Boyoyo Boys produce buoyant music built from chanted, springing rhythms. The 1984 murder of their drummer dealt them a severe loss, yet their following album showed they had returned in full force with Back in Town.
