Biography
Following the 1996 dissolution of Chicago ska-punk legends Slapstick, Brendan Kelly (bass, vocals) and Dan Hanaway (trumpet, guitar, vocals) joined forces with ex-Tricky Dick guitarist Chris McCaughan (guitar, vocals) and Rob DePaola (drums) to launch the Broadways. Politically charged lyrics set against a pop-punk foundation drew immediate comparisons to Fifteen, Crimpshrine, and Jawbreaker, coinciding with the 1997 release of the band’s debut EP, We All Know That You Can Do It, on their own Bicycle Records label. After signing with Asian Man Records, the group issued its second EP, Big City, along with its first full-length album, Broken Star, only to disband in 1998. The following year Asian Man Records issued the retrospective collection Broken Van, while McCaughan and Kelly formed the Lawrence Arms and Hanaway and DePaola established the Honor System.
