Originating in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the early-1970s outfit known as the Buoys ranked among that era’s many one-hit wonders. Its lineup featured Billy Kelly on lead vocals, Fran Bozena on keyboards, Gerry Hludzik on bass, Chris Hanlon on guitar, and Carl Siracuse on drums. The group scored its lone Top 20 success with Rupert Holmes’s composition “Timothy,” for which Holmes also contributed keyboard parts to the Scepter album. Holmes himself later notched vocal hits with “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” and “Him” before turning to Broadway, where he earned acclaim in the late ’80s for The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Following two lesser-charting singles—“Bloodknot” and “Give Up Your Guns”—the Buoys slipped from both the airwaves and the charts, although they briefly shifted to Polydor before disbanding in the mid-’70s. Ten years after “Timothy,” Kelly and Hludzik resurfaced together in the band Dakota.
