Biography
Glaswegian roots rock quintet the Byson Family deliver a rugged strain of Americana shaped by Bruce Springsteen, Little Feat, and the Band. Phil Campbell, a recording veteran with more than two decades of experience who at the time fronted Southern rock outfit the Temperance Movement, launched the group in 2018. His growing dissatisfaction had dated back to 2015, when guitarist and founding member Luke Potashnick—responsible for bringing Campbell into the band—departed, leaving him weary of the heavier direction their newer songs had taken. Seeking a clean break, Campbell contacted two old friends: Mike McDaid, formerly the bassist for Paolo Nutini, and guitarist Christian “Fleetwood” McCabe from the 68’s. The lineup was rounded out by keyboardist Chris Russell, also from the 68’s, and drummer Allan James, known for his work with Jon Fratelli. Early demos revealed a loose, somewhat folky roots-rock approach carrying a clear Americana flavor, and the musicians were immediately encouraged. Their debut performance at Glasgow’s St. Luke’s earned strong approval from both audiences and critics, prompting a committed push into songwriting. Campbell finally stepped away from the Temperance Movement in 2020 to devote himself entirely to the Byson Family, whose first album, Kick the Traces, appeared the following year.
