Biography
The Cascades, a vocal ensemble based in San Diego, delivered performances in a gentle pop style yet secured a Top Ten R&B placement in 1963 with “Rhythm of the Rain,” issued by Valiant. Guitarist and lead vocalist John Gummoe composed the track and performed alongside Eddy Snyder, David Stevens, David Wilson, and David Szabo. The group also drew large audiences throughout England and Australia. After “Rhythm of the Rain,” they issued “Shy Girl” and “Last Leaf,” neither of which matched the earlier commercial impact. “My First Day Alone” failed to chart, leading the members to sign with RCA. No subsequent hit emerged despite further recordings on Charter, Liberty, Arwin, Smash, Probe, UNI, London, and Can Base. The lineup remained active into the early 1970s.
