Biography
Formed in 1993, the Chasm ranks among Mexico’s most revered and emulated heavy metal acts. Ex-Cenotaph vocalist/guitarist Daniel Corchado assembled the lineup with guitarist Erick Diaz, bassist Luis Martinez, and drummer Antonio León. The group introduced itself via the demo Awaiting the Day of Liberation before revealing its singular blend of violent death metal and ambient black metal across a run of progressively distinctive and refined albums: the limited-edition Procreation of the Inner Temple in 1994, the expansive From the Lost Years in 1995, and Deathcult for Eternity...The Triumph in 1997. Around the same period Corchado briefly contributed to American death metal masters Incantation, after which he and León relocated to Ohio. There the pair reconstructed the Chasm with guitarist Julio Viterbo and bassist Alfonso Polo. Securing suitable label support proved difficult, yet the musicians ultimately aligned with independent Dwell Records for the widely praised Procession to the Infraworld in 2000, only for the company to declare bankruptcy shortly afterward. Largely as a result, both the 2001 EP Reaching the Veil of Death and the 2002 album Conjuration of the Spectral Empire appeared as self-released efforts, whereas 2004’s The Spell of Retribution surfaced via Earache subsidiary Witches Brew.
