Biography
Hailing from Australia, the Chats describe themselves as a shed-rock trio that delivers boisterous, vintage-style punk laced with their playful and irreverent wit. More focused on beer, cigarettes, and speedy vehicles than global affairs, the group continues the lineage of Australian acts such as the Cosmic Psychos, the Hard-Ons, and Dune Rats by producing unvarnished, high-energy punk that carries a smirking playfulness and an everyman outlook. The three-piece first gained widespread notice when their track "Smoko" along with its video spread rapidly online in 2017. That same year they released their breakthrough EP Get This in Ya!!, and in 2020 they issued their debut full-length High Risk Behaviour, which reached the Australian Top Ten and turned them into domestic celebrities. Although a significant lineup shift occurred before they recorded their sophomore LP, the pointedly named Get Fucked of 2022 confirmed they remained raw, rowdy, and committed to a good time.
The band formed in 2016 on Queensland's Sunshine Coast while guitarists Josh Price, drummer Matt Boggis, and bassist-vocalist Eamon Sandwith were still attending high school. Taking their name from the nearby suburb of Chatswood, the members listed the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and Black Flag among their initial inspirations, and the characteristically rough-and-ready D.I.Y. punk aesthetic surfaced on their self-titled debut EP that surfaced in 2016. Greater attention arrived with the follow-up Get This in Ya!! and its infectious lead single "Smoko" in 2017. The Chats shot a modest-budget clip for the song at Peregian Beach, Sandwith's residence, and a nearby construction site; the footage was subsequently shared on a surf shop's social media feed, where it quickly accumulated millions of views worldwide and propelled the group to international recognition.
Burger Records, an American independent label, gave Get This in Ya!! wider release in July 2019. Ahead of that reissue the band put out several characteristically blunt, riff-driven singles that later appeared on their first album, High Risk Behaviour, which arrived in March 2020. The LP's title reportedly alluded to a citation Boggis received for skateboarding in hazardous locations. High Risk Behaviour achieved strong domestic success, climbing to number five on the Australian albums chart, and also performed well in Scotland, where it reached number 15. At the 2021 AIR Awards the Australian Independent Record Labels Association honored the Chats' debut LP as Best Independent Punk Album of the Year. Shortly after its release Josh Price departed, and guitarist Josh Hardy, previously of the Unknowns, joined in his stead.
In late 2020 the Chats saluted fellow Australians AC/DC with the single "AC/DC CD," and the next year they supplied a cover of "Can You Point Your Fingers (And Do the Twist?)" for ReWiggled, a tribute collection devoted to the long-running children's group the Wiggles. That same album featured the Wiggles offering their own take on "Pub Feed" from High Risk Behaviour. The Chats also appeared on the wide-ranging Metallica tribute set The Metallica Blacklist, contributing their rendition of "Holier Than Thou." March 2022 brought The First Two EPs by the Chats, a single-disc compilation that combined their self-titled debut and Get This in Ya!! exactly as the title indicated. The new single "Struck by Lightning" emerged the same month as a preview of the band's second studio album. Any concerns that popularity might have softened the Chats' jagged edges were dispelled by 2022's Get Fucked, a boisterous punk session every bit as unapologetic as its name.
