Danny Smith, a vocalist, guitarist, and pianist originally from Ontario, departed his home province in 2002 with aspirations of palm trees, perpetual sunshine, and life in a rock band, pausing en route in Memphis to cut some early demos alongside Lisa Loeb. Once in California he connected with Scott Waldman, a bassist and vocalist born on Long Island who had arrived in the region after completing his studies at the University of Michigan in 2003. California native Marc Precilla, whose background included stints in multiple rock and punk outfits, completed the lineup. The resulting trio took the name The City Drive, a phrase intended to evoke “the push behind the hustle of the city.” Their bright indie-rock sound occasionally nodded to Weezer, the All-American Rejects, and Green Day. The group played the opening night of South by Southwest in 2004 and, that December, signed with We the People Records. Under the guidance of producer Chris Fudurich, whose prior credits include Jimmy Eat World and RX Bandits, they tracked their debut album during the summer of 2005. Always Moving Never Stopping appeared the following June, after which the band remained on tour for the balance of 2006. Several of their songs also surfaced in the films American Pie: Band Camp and Yours, Mine & Ours.
