Formed as an Americana, folk, and country duo centered on guitarist John Paul White and vocalist Joy Williams, the Civil Wars quickly established themselves through the 2009 digital release Live at Eddie's Attic. Later that same year came the Poison & Wine EP, after which the pair teamed with producer Charlie Peacock for sessions that yielded a full-length project in 2010. Issued as Barton Hollow in February 2011, the album topped digital charts and entered Billboard's Top 20 within its opening week. Spring 2012 brought Live at Amoeba, and despite circulating rumors of an impending split, two further releases surfaced in 2013: the soundtrack to A Place at the Table, recorded with producer T-Bone Burnett, and the self-titled studio album The Civil Wars, which arrived at summer's end. Although it debuted at number one and received favorable reviews, the record marked their final collaboration. In August 2014, White and Williams announced that they had "regretfully decided to permanently part ways."
