Musicians who would later comprise the Clumsy Lovers had no initial plans for forming a group. Instead, they performed their lively, folk-infused rock interpretations at various informal spots throughout Vancouver, such as pubs, basements, and backyard gatherings. Audience interest grew, leading to demands for additional performances beyond weekends, which prompted the official establishment of the band. From 2000 through 2002, the Clumsy Lovers issued their own series of recordings that fused Celtic, bluegrass, and rock elements. Live performances remained their main focus during this period. The situation shifted when they produced After the Flood in a professional studio setting for the prominent Canadian label Nettwerk in 2004. Smart Kid came next in 2005, prompting an extensive touring effort to promote it. At this stage, the core members included Chris Joad handling vocals and bass, Andrea Lewis on fiddle with her flame-fingered style, Trevor Rogers playing guitar and harmonica, Jason Horney on banjo, and Gord Robert on drums.
