The Coast's hypnotic melodies spring from the efforts of brothers Jordan Melchiorre on drums and Luke Melchiorre on bass, joined by Ian Fosbery on guitar and keyboards plus Benjamin Spurr on vocals and guitar. The group briefly operated as the July 26th Movement, releasing the Take a Walk Outside EP during 2004, before the Toronto indie rock band reconfigured itself as the Coast in 2005 and adopted a name drawn from a track on Paul Simon's The Rhythm of the Saints. In a matter of months the quartet impressed local club crowds across the Toronto suburbs, fusing their own propulsive pop material with the stylistic echoes of the Verve, U2, New Order, and the Smiths. Appearances alongside Elbow, the French Kicks, Tokyo Police Club, Islands, and the Duke Spirit led directly to the November 2006 arrival of their self-titled debut EP, with a full-length album then planned for the middle of 2007.
