The Come Ons first took shape in 1999 with ex-Gore Gore Girl Deanne Iovan handling bass, vocals, and vintage organ alongside guitarist Jim Johnson and Dirtbombs drummer Patrick Pantano, who split his time between both bands' kits. Their dance-y, soul-inspired grooves quickly caught fire across Detroit even though the group waited before committing anything to vinyl. The first release arrived as the 2000 "Watcha Got?" 7" on Sympathy for the Record Industry, which was soon followed by the band's self-titled full-length on the same imprint. One year later they appeared on Jack White's famous and famously lo-fi Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit compilation, after which they issued the Hip Check! LP. Detroit's embrace of the trio made sense, given how freely the Come Ons pulled from the city's longstanding mix of punk, girl group sounds, and rave-up revivalist R&B. Activity stayed brisk through 2002 and 2003 as the band put out the "Don't Tell Me" 7" on the U.K.'s Sweet Nothing label and tracked its third album at Jim Diamond's Ghetto Recorders.
