Biography
Originating from Como, Mississippi, the gospel trio the Como Mamas acquired its name through involvement in Como Now, the 2006 collection of field recordings assembled by Daptone Records associate Michael Reilly. Ester Mae Smith performs alongside sisters Angela Taylor and Della Daniels, whose grandfather Miles Pratcher was captured on tape in Como by folklorist Alan Lomax during 1959. Daptone released the ensemble’s first album, Get an Understanding, in the opening months of 2013, where it received uniformly favorable notices. With support from the nonprofit Music Makers Relief Foundation, the Como Mamas reentered the studio three years afterward, this time accompanied by Daptone’s regular players operating under the name the Glorifiers. The resulting album, Move Upstairs, appeared in May 2017.
