Biography
Hailing from Canada, the Counselors specialize in indie rock marked by warm detail and a jangling melodic character. Based in Quebec City, the ensemble delivered their debut full-length In from the Archive in 2008, then issued the Brooklyn Sessions EP two years afterward. More than ten years elapsed before the group resurfaced with the 2022 EP Sparks.
Fronted by singer/songwriter Sebastien Theriault, the Counselors emerged from an earlier project called Requiem that achieved recognition during the late '90s and early 2000s. Their inaugural release under the Counselors name, In from the Archive, appeared on Sorry Records in 2008. The same tuneful power pop and wistful alt-rock approach carried over to the 2010 EP Brooklyn Sessions. Silence followed until 2022, when Theriault brought the Counselors back to life for Sparks. While the material echoed prior efforts, the collection adopted a more reflective stance infused with folk-rock elements.
