Listen on Coda
Comprising ten vocalists descended from Haitian slaves—four men (Rogelio Torriente, Fidel Miranda, Marcelo Luis, Dalio Vital) and six women (Teresita Miranda, Emilia Díaz Chávez, Yordanka Fajardo, Irian Montejo, Marina Fernandez, Yara Diaz)—the Creole Choir of Cuba delivers every performance with buoyant swing, infectious groove, and a fervent intensity reminiscent of gospel. Their approach, however, has no connection to church-based gospel traditions. Across Cuba, state-supported vocal ensembles operate in each province as secular institutions, available for weddings, funerals, birthdays, parties, parades, and any other occasion that arises, placing this particular group in a distinct and remarkable category of its own. Founded in 1994 to restore traditional Haitian repertoire for contemporary listeners, the choir performs exclusively in Creole. After signing with Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records, the ensemble issued two albums on the label: Tande-La in 2010 and Santiman in 2013.
