Forming in the closing years of the 1990s, the Dagons emerged as a psychedelic indie pop duo devoted to lo-fi rock. Karie Jacobson, who handled guitar and vocals, encountered drummer Drew Kowalski in the Bay Area, where their initial jamming sessions soon blossomed into romance and a lasting partnership. After relocating to Los Angeles in 1999, the ocean-obsessed pair—named for the Philistines’ half-human, half-fish deity—issued their home-recorded debut The Other Ending on the Dead Sea Captain label they founded themselves. Teeth for Pearls arrived the following November in 2003, evoking a noisier, country-gothic take on Beat Happening paired with Heavenly’s vocal style and minimalist Gypsy-influenced drumming. Even within its lo-fi framework, the album projects a singular otherworldly atmosphere that lends indie rock an expansive, surreal dimension.
