Biography
The Dashboard Saviors formed as a roots-rock outfit in Athens, Georgia, with Todd McBride handling songwriting, vocals, and guitar alongside Michael Gibson on guitar, Rob Veal on bass, and John Crist on drums. R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, who had long supported the quartet, took the helm as producer for their first release, Kitty. Their material frequently sketched everyday scenes from small-town Southern existence, evident in numbers such as “Coach’s Wife” and “A Trailer’s a Trailer.”
Todd McBride, the frontman, absorbed country broadcasts during childhood and drew inspiration from boundary-pushing 1980s West Coast acts like Green on Red and Dream Syndicate. An uncle’s stint in a country-and-western ensemble prompted McBride to pursue a comparable path early on. Prior to the Dashboard Saviors, he played in the La Di Da’s, a band that also featured fellow Athens figure Vic Chesnutt; that connection introduced him to Peter Buck. Buck not only produced and contributed instrumental work to Kitty but also steered the group toward a contract with Medium Cool, the Minneapolis imprint founded by Peter Jesperson, the Replacements’ former manager. After Buck escorted Jesperson to an Athens performance, Jesperson moved quickly to secure the Dashboard Saviors among his initial signings. Freed from their day jobs—McBride had previously sold office supplies—the members embarked on van tours. Their second album, Spinnin’ on Down, appeared in 1993, followed by Love, Sorrow, Hatred, Madness in 1995.
