Ruth "Baby Sis" Davis formed the ensemble in Philadelphia, enlisting Alfreda, Audrey, and Thelma Davis, Imogene Greene, pianist Curtis Dublin, and lead vocalist Jackie Verdell. The act cut sides for Savoy through 1962, after which Verdell issued secular material on Peacock between 1961 and 1964. Although operating as a quintet, the group generated a dense, choral timbre through its robust delivery. Four members met untimely ends via unrelated misfortunes, one of them perishing in a fire. Ruth herself succumbed in 1970 while still young, having battled diabetes together with liver and kidney disease.
