In 1998 The Deadlines assembled as darkwave garage rockers fueled by throbbing rock growls and eyeliner, intent on reshaping the musical landscape. Weary of prevailing sounds, frontman Shaun Sundholm teamed with drummer Jeremy Atrick and guitarist Sammy Lugosi to merge glam rock and punk ingredients. Bassist Thomas Demise entered when the group pivoted toward a fiercer rock edge, while keyboardist the Creature completed the five-piece roster. Their palette spanned the goth atmospheres of Bauhaus and the Damned, the New York Dolls’ theatrical flourishes, and the raw ferocity of the Misfits and the Cramps. Tooth & Nail Records issued the debut The Death & Life Of... in March 2000. A year afterward the band, setting gothic mannerisms aside, cultivated a harder-edged style laced with glam rock vitality alongside a revised lineup of lead guitarist Tim Eurich, drummer Jeremy Abbott, and bassist Joshua Griffith with Sundholm. Fashion Over Function surfaced in November 2001, projecting the group’s unvarnished force, yet additional changes soon followed. Abbott departed; Travis Waldie on drums and Gerrit Lovesick then joined to finalize the configuration.
