The Canadian neo-folk, rock, and alternative country ensemble the Deep Dark Woods came together in Saskatoon in 2005. Core members include singer-guitarist Ryan Boldt, bassist Chris Mason, organist and pianist Geoff Hilhorst, guitarist Clayton Linthicum, and drummer Lucas Goetz. Founding guitarist Burke Barlow remained involved as a songwriter after leaving the group in 2012. The band signed with Sugar Hill Records in the United States and Six Shooter Records in Canada, issuing its self-titled debut album The Deep Dark Woods in 2006 and the follow-up Hang Me, Oh Hang Me the next year. Winter Hours, the 2009 release that served as the group’s breakthrough, preceded The Place I Left Behind in 2011, the album that coincided with Barlow’s departure and Linthicum’s arrival. After Jubilee appeared in 2013—produced by Jonathan Wilson and engineered by Bryce Gonzales—Goetz exited and the Deep Dark Woods entered a hiatus. The band resurfaced in 2017 with Yarrow, its sixth LP.
