Originating from Texas, the Deer craft melodic compositions rich in literary quality, shifting from minimalistic indie folk to intricate and richly textured pop. Their distinctive blend of captivating vocal harmonies and intricate production first took shape across two self-released efforts during the middle of the 2010s, prior to inking a deal with Keeled Scales. The 2019 release of their label debut Do No Harm marked a significant breakthrough, leading the ensemble to dedicate much of the ensuing period dominated by the pandemic to the creation of a pair of fresh long-players, with the initial one, The Beautiful Undead, emerging in 2022.

Assembled from a circle of acquaintances in San Marcos within Texas's Hill Country region, the group initially centered on vocalist and songwriter Grace Rowland, previously known as Grace Park, who issued An Argument for Observation in 2013 under the moniker Grace Park & the Deer. Transitioning by 2015 to simply the Deer, the lineup solidified as a four-piece featuring Rowland alongside multi-instrumentalists Jesse Dalton, Michael McLeod, and Alan Eckert. They produced a pair of records in rapid order—On the Essence of the Indomitable Spirit in 2015 and Tempest & Rapture in 2016—before advancing from local events to broader touring circuits alongside the Head and the Heart as well as Big Thief. The addition of Noah Jeffries in 2019 coincided with their affiliation to the Austin-based independent Keeled Scales, which put out Do No Harm.

Although prepared for extensive live performances, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 confined them, redirecting their focus to studio work. In the midst of worldwide upheaval, the Deer experienced a surge in creative output, capturing enough material for two complete albums. The lush and moody The Beautiful Undead saw the light of day first, in September 2022.
