Biography
Often likened to R&B's counterpart of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the Delta 72 specialized in high-octane indie rock that drew heavier inspiration from the chaotic energy of 1960s garage rock—complete with Farfisa organ breakdowns—and blues-infused punk than from classic R&B itself. Gregg Foreman, handling vocals and guitar, launched the group in the middle of 1994 alongside drummer Ben Azzara and organist Sarah Stolfa. Bassist Kim Thompson, formerly of Cupid Car Club, soon joined, and the quartet hit the road across the East Coast and Midwest. Their debut single, "On the Rocks," appeared in June 1995 via a joint release from Dischord and Kill Rock Stars. Early the next year the band cut The R&B of Membership for the Touch & Go label, now featuring drummer Jason Kourkounis, previously of Mule. Once the album was out, Bruce Reckahn of the Goats took over on bass from Thompson. The Soul of a New Machine, the group's second full-length, surfaced in mid-1997. 000 followed in 2000, yet the Delta 72 disbanded the following July.
