Biography
Forming in Toronto, Canada during 1979, the ensemble known today as the Deserters initially operated under the name the Suspects as a rock outfit. Its founding lineup consisted of bassist and singer Chris Gibb, percussionist and drummer Henry Diclemente, plus guitarist and singer Kenny MacLean. This new wave trio managed to issue one independent single titled "Raining Over France," which attracted notable notice for the emerging act. Within roughly a year the Suspects had rebranded themselves the Deserters, secured a contract with Capitol Records, and issued a double-sided single featuring the tracks "Alien" and "Inner Vision," after which a self-titled debut album appeared.
By 1981 singer and synthesizer player Greg Stephens had come aboard, resulting in the follow-up LP Siberian Nightlife. Despite considerable expectations from both the Deserters and Capitol, the record and its critical reception proved underwhelming, prompting the group to disband permanently.
