The Devons, a Holland-based outfit, merge the crashing force of surf music with the raw tension of punk rock. Their style pulls from early-'60s surf acts such as the Ventures, the Tornadoes, and Dick Dale in one direction while drawing sharp edges from the late-'70s punk of the Ramones, the Clash, and the Sex Pistols in the other. The four-piece lineup—drummer Bas Devon, bassist Gaby Devon, guitarist Opa Devon, and vocalist/guitarist Tony Devon—shares an adopted surname even though only Bas and Tony are biological brothers. Launched in 1978 as a Ramones tribute act, the Devons have steadily broadened their material to encompass high-velocity takes on classic surf numbers. Steady appearances at Woerden’s K'77 nightclub led to wider exposure after a well-received set at a Woerden pop festival in 2000. Work on their first official demo started at John Cram Studios/SMSW in Woerden in April 2003.
