Details concerning the Dice remain sparse and often conflicting, yet indications point to the band's origins in Ontario, Canada, toward the close of the 1970s. Gary Lima served as lead singer and guitarist, Trevor Russell played guitar, and Hayden Vialva handled drums and percussion for the rock lineup. The trio built experience and a local following through repeated appearances at clubs and night spots throughout Ontario. Initial deals with CBS and later other labels permitted the release of several singles and albums before the original lineup dissolved. Brief reunions took place in 1993 and again before the new millennium arrived.

Early tours alongside more established acts provided valuable exposure. In 1980 the members paused live work to record demos aimed at attracting label interest. Those recordings succeeded in drawing attention from a representative, allowing completion of the debut album Broken Rules that same year. A second, self-titled album appeared in 1982 on a new label and included guitar contributions from Peter Frampton. A handful of singles and a four-song self-titled EP followed. Loss of recording contracts after these projects marked the beginning of the end.

Nearly a decade later the independent album Misbehave signaled a short return, followed in 1997 by Nightmare. Among the tracks preserved on Dice recordings are "Beyond the Horizon," "Jungle Track," "Calling in the Rain," "Kings and Queens," and "Wild Tigers."
