The Dogs came together in Rouen, Normandie, during 1973, built around Dominique Laboubée on vocals and guitars, Paul Peschenaert on guitars, François Camuzeaux on bass, and Michel Gross on drums. Early performances placed them in the pub-rock camp, relying on covers that stretched from the Velvet Underground to the Flamin' Groovies. They soon shifted toward self-penned songs in English, drawing primary inspiration from transatlantic acts that ranged from the Flamin' Groovies to Dr. Feelgood. Alongside fellow regional act Little Bob Story, the group transcended strictly local appeal; although commercial success remained elusive, their lasting mark rests on the two best-known albums, Different from 1979 and Too Much Class for the Neighbourhood from 1982. Ongoing endorsement from the longstanding French publication Rock & Folk failed to propel them into broader recognition, yet they continue to command cult devotion, heightened by the final dissolution that followed singer Dominique Laboubée’s death in 2002 at age 45.
