Steve Jansen, Japan's drummer, joined keyboardist Richard Barbieri to issue Worlds in a Small Room on Virgin in 1986 under the Jansen/Barbieri name. They next adopted the Dolphin Brothers identity and delivered the 1987 LP Catch the Fall. EPs appeared both before and after this middling album, which pared down Japan's style and drew sharp reviews for its songwriting weaknesses and Jansen's vocal delivery. The pair maintained their partnership on subsequent projects, among them 1991's Stories Across the Borders, 1994's Beginning to Melt with fellow ex-Japan member Mick Karn, 1997's Stone to Flesh, 1998's Changing Hands alongside Nobukazu Takemura, and 1999's _Ism again featuring Karn.
