Biography
The Dooleys emerged as a family-based pop ensemble originating from Ilford in Essex, England. Core membership consisted of the siblings Jim, Frank, Anne and Kathy, each born in Ilford, together with John Dooley, whose birth took place in Whitechapel, London. Performances initially took place solely for relatives, yet the decision to pursue a professional career arrived in 1973. Instrumental support came from Frank handling lead guitar duties, John supplying rhythm guitar, and two non-family musicians—Bob Walsh on bass and Alan Boean, born in Oldham, Lancashire, on drums. Their pioneering status was established in 1976 when they became the first British vocal group invited to tour the Soviet Union. Commercial breakthrough arrived the following year with the release of the hit single “Think I’m Gonna Fall In Love With You.” Additional UK chart success ensued, notably the Top 10 placements achieved by “Love Of My Life,” “Wanted” and “The Chosen Few.” Their preferred style centred on middle-of-the-road ballads that incorporated soft disco rhythms, placing them alongside contemporaneous acts such as the Nolans and Bucks Fizz. After departing the GTO label—home to all ten of their hit recordings—in the early 1980s, they issued further singles on independent imprints without repeating their earlier chart impact. The group continues to appear on the British club and cabaret circuit.
