Led by vocalist and guitarist Rene Hall, the Dyna-Sores became the third act to score a hit with “Alley Oop,” Dallas Frazier’s tribute to the caveman from the comic strip. Although Dante & the Evergreens climbed only to the 15th position and the Hollywood Argyles, fronted by Gary Paxton, reached number one, the Dyna-Sores still helped make Frazier’s composition one of 1960’s biggest commercial successes. Issued in April 1960—just one week after the Hollywood Argyles and Dante & the Evergreens, the latter featuring Donald “Dante” Drowty, had appeared on the Billboard charts—the Dyna-Sores’ version became the third recording to enter the Top 40. The Beach Boys later revived the number on their 1965 album Beach Boys’ Party! Hall subsequently performed with Sam Cooke and the Marketts, while the remaining members, among them pianist Jack Fina, regrouped as B. Bumble & the Stingers.
