The Enid, a British ensemble, originated in 1974 when Robert John Godfrey, formerly of Barclay James Harvest, established the group alongside Stephen Stewart and Francis Lickerish. Their debut effort, In the Region of the Summer Stars, surfaced in 1976 as a jazz-tinged progressive rock project that clashed sharply with the dominant punk rock climate. Aerie Faerie Nonsense appeared two years afterward, followed by Touch Me in 1979 and Six Pieces the next year. After that release the lineup effectively paused operations, yet Godfrey and Stewart continued as a duo to complete Something Wicked This Way Comes in 1983, the same year that yielded the double live set Live at Hammersmith. The Spell arrived in 1985 and Salome followed in 1986. A farewell concert in 1988 appeared to end the band’s run, though the event later emerged as Final Noise. The dissolution proved temporary, however, as the Enid regrouped in 1995 and subsequently issued Tripping the Light Fantastic along with Sundialer.
