An underground legend for nearly a decade, the Extra Glenns finally brought their album into existence after years of anticipation. Franklin Bruno of Nothing Painted Blue teamed up with John Darnielle from the Mountain Goats for this project, laying down multiple singles along with various compilation appearances throughout the early 1990s before vanishing from view to focus on separate endeavors. Even as each gained wider recognition on their own, opportunities for joint work allowed material destined for Martial Arts Weekend to develop gradually. Revival of the endeavor had never been the plan, yet their covert performance during the 2000 San Francisco Noise Pop Festival drew an audience of two hundred, including dedicated fans who traveled from New York City and beyond just to witness the Extra Glenns, prompting a decision to press forward. Recording sessions followed in San Francisco, continuing until the album's release in January 2002. A contract with Merge arrived in 2010, at which time the pair adopted the name the Extra Lens and issued Undercard, featuring fresh original songs.
