Husband-and-wife duo Jonny Ollsin, formerly of Children and S.T.R.E.E.T.S., and visual artist Kim Krans launched Family Band with assistance from Scott Hirsch of the Court & Spark and Hiss Golden Messenger. The pair first crossed paths in the Catskills during 2005, initially treating the project as a casual outlet while Ollsin remained active in the heavy metal group Children; once that band dissolved, the couple began pursuing the music more intently. By 2008 they had constructed a cabin in Delhi, a modest town in upstate New York, where they encountered Hirsch, whose contributions shaped the ensemble’s blend of folk-infused ambient textures and Krans’s distinctive moody alto. That same year the trio issued its debut EP, Blessed, on a self-released basis, then returned in April 2010 with the self-released full-length Miller Path—titled after a nearby road close to the cabin that hosted most of the sessions—and followed it in November with the audiovisual EP Cold Songs. Features in The FADER, NYLON, and Stereogum elevated their visibility, leading the group to open for kindred atmospheric rockers Warpaint throughout the subsequent spring. Their second album, Grace & Lies, appeared on the No Quarter label in July 2012, while several tracks from Miller Path were licensed by ABC for the crime docudrama series Final Witness.
