Biography
Forming the instrumental support for vocalist Shane Fenton were guitarists Jerry Wilcox (born 1940, lead) and Mickey Eyre (born 1942, rhythm), bassist William Walter Edward ‘Bonney’ Oliver, and drummer Tony Hinchcliffe (born 1940). Establishing themselves independently as the Fentones, they issued multiple instrumental tracks such as ‘The Mexican’ and ‘The Breeze And I’, each achieving a position in the UK Top 50 during 1962. Though momentarily positioned as potential competitors to the Shadows, these expectations exceeded realistic bounds, and consistent with numerous acts from the pre-beat era, the Fentones found themselves overshadowed by the Beatles along with the emerging wave of artists they inspired.
