In 2011 the U.K. noise-pop group the Fireworks assembled after Matthew, the figure behind the indie-pop dance night Big Pink Cake, began delivering songs vocally over the telephone while chatting with friends. Those friends urged him to shape the casual habit into an actual band; once he consented, Emma from the Pocketbooks, Isabel from Things in Herds, and Carys of the Give It Ups stepped in on vocals, bass, and drums. The sound of early My Bloody Valentine, the Flatmates, and the Jesus and Mary Chain supplied the model for the exhilarating mixture of melody and distortion that the quartet immediately brought to the stage, resulting in festival appearances at Indietracks, a session for Dandelion Radio, and the start of EP recording. When those sessions finished, Carys exited and Shaun from the Wedding Present took the drum chair. Shelflife issued the self-titled debut EP at the start of 2013. After extensive international touring and further recordings with David Holmes and with Simon Trought of Allo Darlin and Comet Gain, the band delivered its first album, Switch Me On, on Shelflife in early 2015.
