Biography
Though rooted in old-time traditional sounds evocative of the 1930s or before, the Foghorn Stringband consists of five rock-raised musicians who later gravitated toward Appalachian folk and traditional country. Drawn to those styles, they picked up instruments and first crossed paths at the National Fiddle Championships in Weiser, ID. In 2000 they assembled the band’s initial lineup under the name Foghorn Leghorn, featuring Stephen “Sammy” Lind on fiddle and harmony vocals, the Reverend P.T. Grover, Jr., on banjo, Caleb Klauder on mandolin and harmony vocals, Brian Bagdonas on bass, and a fifth member who soon departed; Kevin Sandri stepped in as lead singer and rhythm guitarist. The group settled in Portland, OR, then shortened its name to Foghorn Stringband. Its debut album, Rattlesnake Tidal Wave, was tracked in September 2002 and issued on the band’s own Foghorn Music imprint in June 2003. Reap What You Sow appeared in August 2004, and in August 2005 Nettwerk America signed the ensemble for the third release, Weiser Sunrise.
