Originating in Canonsburg, PA, the doo wop quartet Four Coins notched several moderate-sized hits throughout the mid- to late '50s. Their standout success arrived with the 1957 release "Shangri La," which climbed to number 11 and fell just short of the Top Ten, while tracks such as "My One Sin," "One Love, One Heart," and "Heartache Street" emerged as notable entries in their catalog. "Shangri La" has endured as their signature recording, inspiring multiple covers across subsequent decades: composer Robert Maxwell delivered a Top 40 instrumental rendition in 1964, Vic Dana reached the Top 40 with his own version that same year, and additional recordings by the Lettermen in 1969 and Al Capps in 1973 followed. In the early '60s, Jackie Gleason incorporated the melody of "Shangri La" as the theme for his Reginald Van Gleason III character on his popular television series.
