Willie Dixon assembled the Four Jumps of Jive as a quartet toward the end of 1945, recruiting Gene Gilmore, Bernardo Dennis, and Ellis Hunter. Blending R&B vocal harmonies with blues elements, the ensemble quickly built a substantial audience in Chicago, raising hopes for an extended recording trajectory that ultimately went unrealized due to the quartet's brief existence. During Mercury Records' initial phase, the group laid down tracks such as "Satchel Mouth Baby" and "It's Just the Blues". Following the 1946 departures of Gilmore and Hunter, Dixon's longtime acquaintance Leonard Caston stepped in, prompting the renamed Big Three Trio to continue delivering comparable R&B and blues fusion over the subsequent ten years.
