Gates took shape in the vibrant college and music hub of New Brunswick, New Jersey, arriving on the scene during the first half of the 2010s with a style that merged hardcore, emo, indie rock, and post-rock. Their first full-length album, Bloom & Breathe, arrived in 2014, followed by Parallel Lives in 2016. After an extended break, the band resurfaced in 2022 via the EP Here & Now.

The group coalesced in 2011, built around guitarist Dan King, bassist Mike Maroney, Daniel Crapanzano, guitarist Ethan Koozer, and guitarist/vocalist Kevin Dye. Drawing on a dense mix of math-tinged post-hardcore, indie rock, ambient pop, and emo, they released two early EPs—the 2011 effort The Sun Will Rise and Lead Me Home and the 2013 release You Are All You Have Left to Fear—before signing with Pure Noise Records. The label later reissued both EPs along with the band’s debut album, Bloom & Breathe, in 2014. Gates delivered their second studio album, Parallel Lives, in 2016, highlighted by the driving single “Habit.” A combination of separate commitments and personal challenges, among them Kevin Dye’s cancer diagnosis and subsequent recovery, led to a period of inactivity, yet the band returned in 2022 with the emotionally charged EP Here & Now.
