Hailing from Portland, the indie rock trio The Ghost Ease crafts dreamy yet slightly aggressive music shaped by '90s alternative rock/grunge alongside the riot grrrl movement. Their tracks often maintain a tense but measured pace before erupting into spirited punk energy, all driven by the distinctive voice of lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Jem Marie. What began in 2010 as Marie’s home-recording solo project evolved into a duo two years later once Nsayi Matingou came aboard on drums. The band tracked its self-titled debut album from winter 2012 into spring 2013, with Joey Binhammer handling engineering and mixing duties while also adding bass to several tracks. After the album appeared on Talking Helps Records, Fabi Reyna joined as bassist, only to be succeeded by Lawrence Vidal in 2014. Cabin Games issued the trio’s 7" EP Quit Yer Job in April 2015, highlighted by a brooding cover of M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls.” Later that year the group cut its second album, Raw, in Seattle under producer Steve Fisk, and the record reached stores in September through a co-release on Cabin Games and K Records.
